A Lived Practice: HumanUfactorY(ng) Workstyles

A Lived Practice is a documentary film; a costume drama of the everyday; a condensed year of life.
I was one of the selected fellows featured in, worked on the production of the most choreographed and costumed sections of films during this three-week (June 2 - June 22, 2014) filmmaking intensive. We were trained in the philosophy of workstyles and practice from the Mildred’s Lane Comportment Manual, thru filmmaking, bookbinding, costuming, fooding, gaming and discoursing on film, theory, and contemporary creative practices.
During this session – everyone present is documenting what and how we do things at Mildred's Lane. This collaboration at Mildred's Lane participated in a project for Chicago —A Proximity of Consciousness, opennedd at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s Sullivan Galleries in September 19, 2014.

Dancing Table

In Mildred’s Lane, I produced this experimental group performances “Dancing Tables Dinner” with other fellows, connecting art with the natural environment and the ideology of “Communism”, as well as using our body as an art form. The whole idea of the “Dancing Tables Dinner” project was about how everyone deals with life when everything is connected and treated as equality.
In this piece, four tables were held up by seven artists, and dancing and spinning within the specific rhymes and directions by the processing of traditional Chinese table manners. We reuse the old table manners to question the artificial, and we encourage the audience to join with us and eat at the “Dancing Tables Dinner”. I tackled big ideas – the ideology of Communism, the origin of life and its perpetual renewal, the need to respect one’s environment – with disarming earnestness.

We, as twenty first century generation, have no choice – we need to be confidence, and as the fastest speed as we can to catch the new industrial revolution and new technology. We can’t wait creating the mass productions and want everything in the fast roll. Yet what is the result, what’s the intention to live life in this way? The whole country of the United States seems like so peaceful, but are we really happy as we seem to be? Our natural environment got destroyed; the pure religion got destroyed; we start judging everything by money……I made a costume by fake printing 100USD and letters "YOU CAN'T TAKE AWAY FROM ME". I wore this costume standing in front of the fake costumed statue of liberty. There are other people who wore cartoon characters' costumes. These characters becoming a surreal world in reality. They are wearing the costumes and make visitors take photo with them, and one picture charged $10. In this piece, I'm questioning what is reality? What is liberty? Can you pay $10 to get a photo of liberty?

Do Birds Know Politics

“Do Birds Know Politics” is a series of three videos documenting how the birds, wind and rain have the capacity to wash and destroy a printed image I created of Chairman Mao. I like to contrast traditional history and mass-consumerism and popular culture. I’m deeply interested in a true model for an ideal Communist Society and a nature-based spiritual belief system.

Bonfire Design Project (Part Two)

Bonfire Design Project (Part Two)

As one of the selected fellows at Mildred's Lane on June, 2014, we tore down an old wood house by hand. Then, we re-sharpen and re-use these materials from the old wood house to build the Bonfire installation.
Bonfire Design Project exists in three parts: the first part is re-cycling and re-use the materials from the old wood house and the second is a sculpture made out of the old materials we collected, as well as the third part is the Bonfire Design in which fire burned down through three different ways from bottom all the way to the skyline. In the end, these recycling materials burned into ashes and fell into ground.
